Planning a team building event for your employees? That’s great. Team bonding is a great way to develop a strong team that works together effectively and efficiently towards a common goal.
However, planning an event like this can also be intimidating. There is just so much to do! That’s why Teambonders has created a list of six steps to help you plan a successful team building event.
1 - Make a list
While it sounds like an obvious step, event planners often fail to create a detailed list of things that need to be accomplished prior to scheduling a team bonding event, or any event for that matter.
Before you start to source venues and purchase décor and sustenance, make a to do list. This will help ensure that you have considered all of the details, while allowing you to appropriately budget and divvy up tasks to committee/planning members.
2 - Have a purpose
Organizing anything without having a clear goal is a good way to set yourself up for failure. Without a clear purpose, you have nothing to tie the details to.
That is why we always recommend that you decide why you are hosting the event before you start planning. Do you want to work on conflict resolution? Customer service? Respect? Are you implementing a new process? Merging teams?
Whatever the reason, knowing why you are there will ensure your event is a success.
3 - Be realistic
Sometimes our imagination can run away from us and suddenly we are in the middle of planning an event that requires more time, money and resources than we have to spare.
To ensure your event is a success, be sure that you know your limitations prior to the planning process and allocate resources to each detail. Even if you don’t have a three-ring circus and live rock band, your attendees will still have a wonderful time if your event is well thought out from the beginning to the end.
4 - Delegate responsibilities
Working as a team to plan your team building event is a great way to get off to a good start. Ensure you have a group of committed people to help you put the event together – this will make it less intimidating and will improve brainstorming. After all, two heads (or more) are better than one.
Most importantly, when delegating tasks, remember to consider your teammates interest. Everyone will enjoy the planning process more, if they are in charge of areas that reflect the things they enjoy.
5 - Attitude is everything
Emotions are contagious! The attitude of your guests will greatly reflect the attitude of you and your planning team. On the day of the event, be an example and ensure you are having a fun time.
6 - Consider the worst
Hope for the best and expect the worst. While you don’t want to bring yourself down thinking about everything that could go wrong, planning for the worst will ensure you are prepared.
Prior to the event, look at every detail and consider what could go wrong, then make sure you have a plan b. This will prepare you to effectively cope and move on if anything does disrupt your event.
