4 Tips to Ensure a Successful Teambonding Event

Posted by Jake Mandel on Aug, 14, 2018

You’ve spent weeks or even months planning your teambonding event. You have considered your objectives, sourced fun activities, found a venue and have notified your employees. Best case scenario, your employees have a fun time while learning skills that can be applied to their everyday job.

Worst case, neither of these goals are met.

So how do you ensure that your event is as successful as possible? Here are four tips to help create an event that your employees will enjoy and learn from:

1 - Link the event to daily responsibilities

While every team bonding event should be fun and exciting, it is important to connect activities, and the event itself, to the struggles and objectives that your employees face every day.

Doing so will make the activities more relevant to your employees, increasing participation, while also helping them perform their day-to-day responsibilities as well as possible.

2 - Remember the little things

It’s easy to miss the smallest of details. While they may not seem as important as some other aspects of planning the perfect event, such as choosing activities, neglecting to consider them can have a negative effect on an event.

The comfort and inclusivity of employees during a team bonding event is critical. Failing to consider small details, such as transportation or having enough food and beverage, can result in employees becoming distracted by their discomfort or the feeling of unmet expectations.

Be sure to look at the finest of details, so that your employees can focus on the real purpose of the event and get as much as possible out of attending.

3 - Build excitement beforehand

Simply telling your employees about the event may not be enough to get them excited. That’s why during the days and weeks leading up to the event, you should find ways to engage your team and get them excited about the upcoming teambonding experience.

Conducting informal surveys or asking employees to give suggestions about different aspects of the event can be a good way to help them connect with the event.

You could also introduce a theme to get your team talking about what they plan on doing for the event - what will they be wearing? What persona they will take on? etc.

You can also promote chatter by sharing exciting tidbits from the event. Give hints, do a sample teambonding activity or provide teasers without uncovering every fun detail.
